How we work
How we work
We provide clinical psychology support for adults in Bromley and south east London, working entirely online through video and phone sessions. From your first conversation with us through to a full course of therapy, sessions are planned around your goals rather than following a fixed script.
Getting in touch
The process starts with a conversation, not a form to fill in blind. When you contact us, we’ll ask what’s been happening, how long it’s been going on, and what you’d like to be different. This isn’t a formal assessment yet, it’s a chance to check that what we offer is a reasonable fit for what you need. If it isn’t, we’ll say so rather than starting work that won’t help.
Your first session
The first proper session is more structured. We’ll go through your current difficulties in more detail, some relevant history, and what’s already been tried, if anything. We’ll also talk about what you want to get out of therapy, which shapes how the following sessions are planned. Some people arrive with a clear sense of the problem, others arrive with a general feeling that things aren’t right and want help working out why. Both are a reasonable starting point.
How we approach therapy
We draw on established, evidence based approaches rather than a single fixed method. Cognitive behavioural therapy, which NICE recommends for a range of difficulties including anxiety and depression, often forms part of the work, alongside other approaches chosen to fit the specific problem and how you respond to it. Where trauma is a factor, for example, we may draw on approaches NICE recommends specifically for that. The point isn’t to apply a technique for its own sake, it’s to use what fits the problem in front of us and adjust as we go, based on what’s actually helping.
Working online
Sessions run over video or phone, at a time arranged directly with you. For video sessions, a private space with a stable connection is worth setting up in advance, somewhere you won’t be interrupted or overheard, whether that’s at home in Bromley or Beckenham, on a break, or anywhere else you can get half an hour of uninterrupted time. Phone sessions work well when video isn’t practical. Neither format requires travel, which for many people is one of the more useful things about working this way, particularly given how much of the week can already be taken up by commuting into central London from Bromley South or Bromley North.
Between sessions
Therapy doesn’t only happen in the session itself. Depending on the approach we’re using, there may be small things to notice, try or reflect on between appointments. These aren’t homework for its own sake, they’re a way of testing out ideas from the session in real situations, then bringing what happened back to talk through. We’ll check in regularly on whether the current approach is working and adjust it if it isn’t, rather than continuing with something that isn’t shifting anything.
Bromley and south east London
We are clinical psychologists for Bromley and south east London, working online with adults, and that focus shapes how we think about the practical side of therapy, from the times sessions are offered to how we talk about local pressures, whether that’s the pace of life around the High Street and The Glades or the demands of commuting into Victoria or London Bridge. The area we cover includes Beckenham, Chislehurst, Shortlands, Bickley, Hayes and Petts Wood, alongside Bromley itself, all served through the same online format.
Confidentiality and professional standards
All clinical work follows the professional and ethical standards that apply to psychologists practising in the UK, including the usual limits on confidentiality where there’s a serious risk to you or someone else. You should feel able to speak plainly in sessions, and we’ll be clear with you about what stays private and the specific circumstances where it wouldn’t.
What this site will tell you next
This page covers the shape of the work. Other pages on this site set out the specific difficulties we support and go into more detail on individual therapeutic approaches. We will update this site as the practice develops, but the core of how we work, online sessions, adults only, built around your goals, is not expected to change.
